Spirit and Flesh is one of my paintings that derive from attending theater events.In this case it was the Broadway Musical, Victor/Victoria. during the show I made sketches onto the playbill. One of these became a silicone intaglio print made at the Women's Studio in Rosendale,NY. This print became the basis for this watercolor which was done at the Johnson Vermont Artist Retreat. There I also met Haruki who later invited me to show my work in two German Restaurants in Tokyo in June of 2003. This work shows how following the actors as they move on stage distorted their shapes into semi-abstractions. The white and winged figures represent the spiritual side of man and the dark ones represent the erotic and lower tendencies. The two are inextricably intermixed and it is impossible to tell where one starts or ends.
